I’m Coming

O’ Shea’s was packed with regulars who just got off work. Parker still sat at the bar, his vision locked onto the TV—Two hours of uninterrupted newscast. Parker loved seeing Mark space flashed on the screen as a person of interest, which had been upgraded 30 minutes ago to a potential suspect in the bombings, including the warehouse.

Fresh out of prison, according to reports, this has to be his worst nightmare. Parker smiled despite himself. He looked around the room. The chatter in the pub remained grim since he arrived; the faces in the room were glum. Parker pushed back another smile. That’s right, be afraid, be terribly afraid. Any day can be yours, your family, friends, whoever’s time to perish.

Parker glanced at his watch—time to go. He stood, paid Mickey, and left the bar. On the street, Parker flagged down a taxi. He got in, and several minutes later, he was standing in front of a three-story brownstone in the south end. Though he technically lived there, he hadn’t stepped foot into the house but three times since getting out of prison 16 months prior. He climbed the stairs to the front door and let himself in.

The place held too many memories for him. Most of them were so good they hurt. The last time he “lived” there was with his wife and child—when things were good. Before the cruel world took them away from him: His child…and…his wife. Pictures of a happy family adorned the walls and all available space in every room and along the walls of the three flights of stairs.

Moving through the house, his emotions stirred deep within him. He pushed him back down, so he could concentrate on what he came to get from upstairs. Every good plan has a backup. Although he thought the knapsack filled with disks that he had in his son’s bedroom would be used for an entirely different purpose—taking his own life.

He climbed the stairs to the second-floor landing, which contained four bedrooms and a full bathroom. He turned right and walked down the long hallway. Light glinted from a window at the other end. Shadows danced around him.

“Soon, I’ll be with you,” he said aloud, stopping before the room’s door. He took a deep breath and entered the room. The knapsack lay on the bed where he left it—and plan to meet his maker. The pack contained enough explosives to demolish the entire building. Parker, a proud homeowner, loved the old brownstone. Over the years, they restored the old home to its original grandeur.

After sitting on the bed, he opened the pack and removed a bomb vest of his design. The vest had six specially made pockets for the disks to be inserted into with a snug fit, which were positioned to do maximum damage. The vest was made for him, but he might need it for someone else.

He reached back into the back, removed several disks, and placed them into each pocket. He set the vest aside and looked into the pack to see how many disks remained.
